Book Talk: January Uppercase Review

Here we have your regularly scheduled Happy Hub! Wait, that's not it. We've had to switch some things around at the end of this month because my Uppercase Box arrived a day too late but it's all good because you know what they say. Better late than never!

Alice in (Winter) Wonderland
The first thing I noticed when I pulled my bag out of the envelope was the crinkle of a cellophane wrapper. It was soft and squishy, which made me think it may have been another tote bag. I would not have been mad about that. Instead, it was an Alice in Wonderland scarf! Definitely not what I was expecting. There are passages from the book on there alongside the original illustrations! Very whimsical, indeed. The scarf is an Uppercase exclusive so I couldn't point you towards a similar product but trust me, it's the perfect addition to any reader's wardrobe.

Seed paper & quote magnet
The second goody was almost mistaken for trash. When I pulled out the scarf with a flourish I also pulled out a scrap of green paper. It was such an odd shape I verbally said, "I hope this is not a piece of something inside the box." I had to set it aside for the time being while I pulled out the magnet because it wasn't until I read the letter that came in the box that I understood what it was. Turns out it's seed paper cut into a book shape! Even after I knew it was book-shaped I had trouble seeing it, but I digress. This slip of paper is from Bloomin and apparently contains an herb mix. I was actually interested in buying some seed paper a few years back but I never got around to it so I'm so happy to have the opportunity to give it a test run now without having to shell out any of my own cash. My mom also loves herbs so maybe this will be the start of something new for our garden.

John Hancock Elly Blake
As I mentioned earlier, there was also a magnet for this book. On the magnet is a quote that reads, "Face them like a warrior, whether you are one or not." Sounds to me like Frostblood by Elly Blake will feature a protagonist that is a lover, forced to be a fighter. From the bits and pieces I've heard about this book, I know that it's a high fantasy debut novel about two peoples (either kingdoms or races, I'm not clear on that) with different elemental powers. One of fire and one of frost. I would assume there is a war of some sort. I'm actually super excited to read this book. I have no idea what their powers entail. Do they shoot them out of their hands like Elsa? Or do they just radiate their heat/ice? I guess Elsa also does that... Or do they control the fire/frost around them rather than create it? I'll let you know when I read it. ;)

The February Box (x)
This was an interesting box. We've had a couple very exciting boxes in recent months so although this one was not as good as some of the boxes in the past, it wasn't a disappointment. On Uppercase's Instagram account, they announced they're partnering with Epic Reads for the February box for exclusive items and an awesome book. I've had a lot of luck with Epic Reads and I'm a fan of a lot of their books and authors so I have a feeling it's going to be a really good one. I'll have to refrain from looking at their February releases to avoid spoilers. Eee!

Talk to you soon!

  1. This box is almost too good to be true! I kept reading "Frost Blood" as "First Blood" for whatever reason.
